Salt Lick BBQ
Driftwood, TX

Nominated as the Manliest Restaurant in 2011 because although BBQ bonafides are subjective, with consensus scattered into fierce factions—the vinegar zealots, the dry-rubbers, the tomato-based titans; even the South Carolinian mustard mavens. Yet many of the country’s finest practitioners of the craft agree that the Texas Hill Country region houses an unparalleled collection of greats, and that the Salt Lick’s succulent sausages, brisket, and ribs are especially worth the trip

The Original Black’s Barbecue
Lockhart, TX

100 percent Angus beef brisket, fall-off-the-bone pork spare ribs, and giant whole BBQ chickens—but for most visitors, the smoky, house-made sausage rings laced with jalapeño and cheese are what makes Black's Number 1

Lockhart Smokehouse

Jill Grobowsky Bergus grew up steeped in the legacy of great BBQ. Her grandfather, Edgar "Papa" Schmidt ran the legendary Kreuz Market from the time he purchased it from the Kreuz family in 1948.She and her husband, Jeff are fulfilling one of their wildest dreams.Kismet and Jack Daniels brought them Pitmaster Tim McLaughlin, who trained in the original Kreuz Market in Lockhart. Lockkhart Smokehouse is the only place in the DFW area where you can get Kreuz Market Sausage. And just like the original, the meat is served on butcher paper, without sauce and without forks. The meat doesn't need sauce and your fork is at the end of your arm. The brisket, sausage, ribs and other meats are smoked over Texas post oak. Updated versions of classic southern sides and some Schmidt family favorites round out the menu. Of course, what is Texas barbeque without cold beer? Lockhart Smokehouse has the great ones ice cold and ready for your drinking pleasure.

Meshack’s Bar-B-Que Shack
Garland, TX

Hickory is by far the dominant cooking wood for barbecue in this area, but Travis Mayes chooses the state tree of Texas (pecan) to fuel his smoker.Brisket is the best in the Dallas Fort Worth area & definitely worth the trip to Garland. It’s a challenge to find the joint itself, much less a place to park. Ordering is done by shouting into a small screened portion of a soot-covered window. Then a figure appears in the smoky concrete box to hand over a brown sack full of perfectly smoked meat. It’s a challenge to find the joint itself, much less a place to park. Neely's
Marshall, TX
Latest Review
A classic Texas BBQ place founded in 1927 serving “Brown Beef”,“Brown Pig” and “Little Pig Ham” sandwiches. The restaurant’s barbecue pit is a steel cylinder type and burns hickory wood–the pork butts, briskets and hams are all wood-smoked. The chopped barbecued pork sandwich outsells both of the other two by a wide margin–it’s become so iconic that most people mistakenly call the restaurant “Neely’s Brown Pig.” The amazing thing is that here; the pork is most popular. Texans pride them selves on eating only beef BBQ.

Stanley's Famous Pit BBQ
Tyler, TX
Latest Review
Serving up the best brisket, turkey, sausage, hotlinks, pulled pork, baby back ribs, fish tacos, homemade potato salad, cole slaw, beans, sauce, and service in Tyler and East Texas. The four meat sampler plate should become a staple of every self-respecting BBQ joint. The idea of piling a plate with multiple proteins, and diggin' in without the distractions of cole slaw, pinto beans or anything else is a great idea. The ribs are often overlooked; but Stanley's won Texas Monthly's best pork ribs in 2010
